Preserving Historical Buildings with Custom Mounts: The Art of Discreet Security

Security systems have come a long way in their design and customization, but what if they could completely blend into the architecture of a historical building?

With special effects and creative placement (and a partner like us!), it’s not only possible, but it’s fun too.

These property types – think decades-old government buildings, ornate theaters and historic districts, for example – come with unique requirements, which mean that off-the-shelf solutions simply won’t cut it.

Such projects are typically low-volume and take extra elbow grease, creativity and collaboration – things most manufacturers can’t accommodate. Even if they do offer customization options for security mounts, the long lead times and high costs often make it out of reach for the party responsible for the upgrade and installation.

While some may see a project like this as a time-consuming headache, we see it as a playground of opportunity.

Matching the New with the Old

For historical buildings, the goal isn’t modernization; it’s preservation. We’ve shared that security systems can be aesthetic, but this takes it to a whole new level! Here, it’s about seamlessly blending the new with the old, and color-matching plays a big part in that process.

A security fixture that looks brand new can stand out in the worst way, so we create finishes that appear to match the age of the property. Let’s just say we’re not afraid to get the blow torch out or use a special acid wash to add just the right amount of rust or patina.

(It’s probably worth clarifying here that the designs are only made to look old, rusted and patinaed… Our custom device mounts – all manufactured in the U.S. – are always made out of durable materials that are designed to stand the test of time.)

Another important factor in the preservation process? Placement.

Location, Location, Location

Placement matters just as much as color-matching. We’ve built pedestals wrapped in wood grain vinyl and hidden them in shrubs so they virtually disappear into the landscaping.

In one project, drilling into the structure wasn’t allowed, so we designed a weighted sled system that extended up and over the parapet, then down against the facade of the building. The security camera was exactly where it needed to be – without compromising the integrity of the property.

Every site has its own restrictions, from strict style guidelines to regulations on mounting and modifications. Instead of forcing a standard SKU, we work with integrators, architects and historical committees to create custom solutions that fit both visually and structurally.

But historical buildings aren’t the only spaces where security needs to blend in. Museums, luxury hotels, high-end corporate offices and even modern public spaces often require security solutions that are effective yet unobtrusive.

If you’re facing a security challenge that requires a creative approach, let’s talk. We’ll find a way to integrate security where it belongs – without compromising design.
