Rethinking Emergency Call Stations

Why does the security market need to think differently about emergency call stations?

Today’s security teams rely on cross-functional platforms and integrated solutions to perform in emergencies.

Emergency call stations haven’t kept pace. Most feature a stand-alone intercom system with limited or no ability to integrate with the properties’ broader security technology ecosystem. Plus, the stations are unattractive, expensive, and cumbersome to install. At Pedestal PRO, we saw an opportunity to introduce significant innovation and bring to market a superior solution. Our completely fresh approach benefits security teams, systems integrators, and the public. It’s a real game-changer.

What makes your new PRO Stations that much different?

First, at Pedestal PRO, we believe that customers should have a choice of vendor-specific technologies to deploy within their call stations. They've carefully selected their site's other security solutions, like access control, cameras, video management systems, and visitor management systems, probably because of how well they all work together. The same standards should apply to their emergency call station technology.

To deliver on that mission, we use the same business model we've used for years to become the leading provider of access control pedestals. We let customers purchase their intercom solution from any manufacturer, and then order from us a customized emergency call tower or wall station ready to accommodate their devices-of-choice. It’s a turnkey service.

Next, we don’t think customers should have to “settle” for how their stations look. Our customers spend a lot of time and money designing and maintaining beautiful environments. They don't want to compromise the aesthetics of their campuses, parks, train stations, city centers, or wherever with a bunch of ugly emergency stations. Unfortunately, until now, there's been no alternative.

Our models are different. We spent a lot of time developing a patented, low-profile architectural design with a unique octagon shape that's sleek but super sturdy. We use rust-free, powder-coated aluminum and accent the structures with programmable strobes and LED lighting strips. I recently spoke to a security integrator, Georgia-based RR Tech, who is installing some of our units for a project in Gainesville, FL. He said his client just loves the look of the PRO stations. He said, "They have a real 'cool' factor and a killer design." People don't expect to hear those words when they're talking about emergency stations!

Finally, we’ve devised a way to take the pain out of installation. Our units ship separately from the technology, with laser cutouts sized and placed perfectly for the intended emergency call device. The removable back panel makes it easy to integrate the technology onsite. The 104" tower weighs only 62 pounds and is shipped via UPS, FedEx, or LTL. That's hundreds of pounds lighter than our competition. But it's just as strong. The tower can withstand sustained Category 4, 135 mph hurricane-force winds. We offer four ways to secure the PRO Stations to the ground, including a pre-fabricated anchor that requires no poured concrete. A single worker can install them without a crane, flatbed, or other special equipment.

How else can the units be customized?

Our tower model features four integrated cameras within its sidewalls to provide 360° coverage. Customers can specify the cameras of their choice. In addition, the tower's modular design provides a removable top cap. Beneath it is a sturdy mounting plate that accommodates an 18-inch extension to either add height or integrate other technology like network horns, surveillance cameras, and solar panels. We've heard a dealer describe our solution as "like a computer rack, where the components are all customized to his client's needs." I think that’s pretty accurate.

Pedestal PRO provides free CAD services to alter existing designs to meet particular job requirements. We'll adjust the height, customize the color, provide custom lettering, and even provide full-color vinyl graphics. We offer a unique "Mascot Program" that lets customers brand the units with school colors, team logos, or corporate identities. We want the devices to be a welcome visual addition to their surroundings.

What’s the ordering process? How long does it take for delivery?

Our products are available through distribution, including Wesco and ADI. We also accept orders directly through our website, at pedestalpro.com.

There's no minimum quantity required for fabrication. Standard delivery requires a 12-15 day lead time, but we can "Fast Track" orders for an additional charge.

Our website makes it easy to order. Customers can start with a design they see posted and customize it, or start from scratch and build what they want from the ground up. We have an extensive library of specifications for popular intercom systems, cameras, and other devices, making it easy for us to design each PRO Station accurately. Everything will be precut, lined up, and matched to accept bolts, wires, and devices to minimize installation work in the field.

How does the price compare to traditional call stations?

Great question! Here is a rare instance where superior quality doesn't come at a premium price. Our stations deliver considerable savings over anything else on the market, particularly considering the total cost of ownership.

Our stations' list price is similar to or less than other available solutions. But we also provide free design customization, much lower shipping costs because our units are so much lighter, and huge savings on installation. The cost of pouring cement, renting a crane, or having a minimum of three men on site all adds up. None of those things are necessary to install our models.

There may be other hidden savings, too, because of our design's flexibility. For example, by including a surveillance camera on top of a call tower, customers may eliminate the need to mount and wire a camera somewhere else nearby. Because the intercom and video cameras can integrate with other onsite technologies, like the property's VMS platform, security teams may be able to support the call towers more efficiently. And, if the technology inside the tower needs to be serviced, our removeable back panel and modular design makes it very easy to access all the components and wiring.

Where can security professionals see a PRO Station in person?

We currently have floor models equipped with a 2N intercom solution and Axis cameras at the Axis Experience Centers in Montreal and Vancouver, Canada. In March, they will also be on display at all 12 AECs across the U.S. as well.
